The new library design takes its inspiration from the neighbourhood vernacular of houses with pitched roofs. I decided to take this notion of community inspiration somewhat literally. Having studied the common house types in the neighbourhood, I propose to transform them into slightly abstracted concrete miniatures. The new, mini neighbourhood of gabled houses playfully interacts with the scale of the library and the large elm tree, all the while providing a seating arrangement that fosters various types of occupation by individuals and groups. I would hope it also brings smiles to people’s faces; there is something elemental about the small, simplified form of a house that brings to mind children’s doodles and dollhouses.

Construction begin in Sept. 2012.

A house is a dwelling, a built structure for human habitation. A house has many constituent functions: bedroom for people to sleep, bathroom for people to pee, kitchen for people to cook, living room for people to gather, dining room for people to eat... It accommodates anything and everything an occupant might need to do. Each person or family gets his own house, whether they are doctors, fishermen, writers, gardeners, chefs...

I am wondering - what if, instead of providing a single person with all uses, each house had only one use, but could be occupied by anyone? What would that be like? This project is a nonchalant experiment in assigning houses with specific, singular functions, and inviting the town in. At the end of this, I will have a small town made of small houses.

The design concept for this piece is that of a forest, to which people may flock and which they may wander around and explore. In the imaginary scene, the chairs are trees and the trellis a tree crown. This temporary installation is infrastructural in nature; it allows for activities, perhaps suggests them, perhaps only inspires people to suggest them, rather than outlining a clear pattern of observation, occupation and interaction. The practice of exploring is the intent. This is a common childhood activity, as I see it – cutting the path to an adventure in a slightly unusual environment. The tall chair-trees come together to form a labyrinth to explore, with different clearings that foster more static individual or group activities.

Building a fort, out of boxes, pillows, sheets – anything that comes in handy – to act as an infrastructure for play, is a very common childhood activity. These make-shift structures allow for an engagement in playful behaviours that require a certain level of privacy, fantasy, sense of ownership. We are proposing to blow the child’s fort up in terms of architectural scale, thereby setting up the infrastructural framework for a variety of play to occur on a communal, congregational level. Despite several specifically programmed moments in the proposed structure, our approach to play is not prescriptive. The playground is merely a field for play to develop.

While the proposed structure is almost entirely transparent, it is also rather informal, perhaps even awkward, to actually access for adults – by climbing onto a narrow slide, by crawling through a tire tunnel, squeezing through tight openings in the frame. Emergency adult supervision may be possible via a dedicated entry, but the intent is for children to feel as if they are devising their own way of entering into their own place. Once inside, they are free to invent their own manner of play, whatever that may be, or to simply run around and around.

A trade show floor is not the most accommodating place for performance art. The vast openness of space, the depressingly even lighting, the overwhelming buzz of the crowd and the sheer gaudiness of it all combine to effectively drown out any event. The project brief called for a temporary spatial installation tuned to several dance acts.

The basic design concept is that of a tree to which people may flock. Benches are imagined as branches, which may be occupied, and the ceiling piece as a tree crown, loosely outlining the extents of space and, thereby, containing the performance. While the benches invite people to flock, they also suggest a boundary between spectator and actor. The viewer gets an uncommonly close view of the performance, but remains outside of the immediate domain of the stage.

The central feature exhibit for the premier design event on the West Coast, IDSWest. The exhibit was called the Stories Behind Design and featured 20 world famous design pieces. The unique feature of the exhibit was the inclusion of the first hand designers’ stories, allowing the visitors insight into the creation of the objects.

With the launch of their 2008 Jetta TDI Clean Diesel, Volkswagen Canada engaged Cause+Affect to design a consumer experience communicating the benefits of this new technology. We developed the new campaign around the tag line, Green Guts and produced exhibitions and marketing materials for Vancouver and Toronto consumer events.
